German Test for Immigrants (DTZ)
Your language examination for the integration course
The German Test for Immigrants (DTZ - Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) is a language examination to determine German language proficiency at levels A2 and B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and serves as the final language examination in integration courses.[web:14][web:21]
The DTZ consists of a written and an oral examination. The written examination includes listening and reading tasks and lasts 100 minutes. Additionally, you must write a short letter in the written section. The oral examination lasts approximately 15 minutes. Here you should briefly introduce yourself and talk about specific topics with the examiners and another test candidate.[web:18][web:21]
After passing the examination, you will receive a certificate that certifies your language proficiency at level B1 or A2. If your language skills are still below level A2, you will not receive a certificate, but only a notification of your result.[web:19]
Examination Structure
📝 Written Examination
Duration: 100 minutes
- Listening comprehension: Understanding everyday conversations and announcements
- Reading comprehension: Reading letters, advertisements, and information texts
- Written expression: Writing a short letter
💬 Oral Examination
Duration: approx. 15 minutes
- Introduce yourself and talk about yourself
- Communicate with examiners and another test candidate
- Talk about specific everyday topics
Participation Requirements
- Knowledge of the Latin script
- Minimum age 16 years
- Valid participation authorization for the integration course (including mandatory participants)
or
Prior participation in at least one course section of the integration course (without participation authorization, at your own expense)

Your Certificate
After passing the examination, you will receive an official telc certificate that certifies your German language skills at levels A2 or B1.[web:19]
The certificate is recognized throughout Germany and serves as proof for:
- ✓ Successful completion of the integration course
- ✓ Application for a permanent residence permit
- ✓ Naturalization (when achieving B1 level)
- ✓ Job applications and professional qualifications
